WHAT workplace allows people to diverge from their role? MSPs are there to examine the work of the Scottish Government and represent us in the Scottish Parliament. Next Tuesday, however, Holyrood will hold a debate and vote on the Middle East conflict. While there may be people in Scotland who are affected by this, this is not what MSPs should be discussing. They have no power over foreign affairs or defence. The debate will be a soapbox for the SNP and the Greens to imply that they are on the world stage. If only they would show any interest in the matters they can influence: NHS waiting lists, education, social care, poverty, drug deaths, the £1 billion black hole to name but a few. That is, after all, what the Scottish people elected them to do. Jane Lax, Aberlour.

“Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before” said Edgar Allan Poe. Anyway, he didn’t know about the SNP. However, Scotland Matters has looked into the heart of darkness and brought you back the horrors that dwell in the fever dreams of the SNP.

Stephen Flynn MP, the SNP leader in Westminster, used the word “transparency” when being interviewed on his call for a ceasefire in Gaza. Transparency? From an SNP member? Such as the Ferguson ferry fiasco? Such as Humza Yousaf’s dates referring to disclosure on the Covid enquiry? Such as Michael Matheson’s £11,000 Morocco holiday iPad bill? Such as Nicola Sturgeon’s “I cannot recollect…” during the Alex Salmond affair? Have these SNP politicians no shame? Stan Hogarth, Strathaven, South Lanarkshire.
THE SNP has no real say in foreign affairs yet it is using the situation in Gaza for political purposes. It wants a ceasefire – this is a politically light-weight position to take. In a very serious situation like this, a ceasefire only helps Hamas and then everything would just start all over again. At Holyrood this seems to count for little, hence the Greens would be happy. Anas Sarwar has also called for a ceasefire – showing his grasp is not great either. So here we have it: the SNP just doesn’t think about the consequences of anything it does, the Greens oppose anything remotely sensible and Labour cannot make up its mind Scotland is in the direst of positions right now – making poor choices both at home and abroad.
