The Scottish Government held an emergency summit on violence in schools yesterday amid a shocking rise in attacks on staff.

Teachers, council officials and unions attended the first phase of the three-part meeting convened by Education Secretary Jenny Gilruth, to discuss the reporting and monitoring of classroom incidents. The emergency summit was called after the Daily Record’s Our Kids… Our Future campaign highlighted a series of sickening attacks involving schoolchildren.

We revealed that violent incidents in primary schools shot up to nearly 11,000 in 2021/22 – up by 56% compared to the previous year, which coincided with the pandemic. In secondaries, the number of violent reports increased from 1,544 in 2020/21 to 2,951 last year – a huge rise.
