The costs of the two over-budget and delayed ferries being built at Ferguson Marine could spiral to more than £300m, which is the current estimated price for them.

Despite the initial contract stating a £97m cost, this has sky-rocketed in recent years and has tripled in price due to long-standing issues at the Port Glasgow shipyard.

Recently, former deputy First Minister John Swinney confirmed that the Scottish Government would be handing Ferguson Marine a further £6m to help get them built, while also revealing that the Glen Sannox and Hull 802 delivery would be delayed by another seven months. It means the total bill now stands at £293m.

Both vessels were meant to be put into service in 2017, but mechanical issues, and the shipyard going bust, means that they are still yet to be fully completed.

The handling of them has been described as a “ferry fiasco” following a scathing Audit Scotland report which highlighted glaring issues with the procurement process.
