An ever-increasing number of deflating failures doesn’t sit well with Nicola Sturgeon. Her dictatorial grip on the party is waning as the Westminster contingent experiences rising levels of dissatisfaction with her lack of progress on independence. Her hope of the Supreme Court bending to her desire to hold another referendum was dashed. Now it’s time to inflate a piece of highly flawed legislation into a constitutional crisis – or so she hopes. Never one to apply due diligence to the nuances of legislation, Miss Sturgeon is again set to ask the courts to rule on her political conniving. But her inflammatory language in trying to portray the Tories as ‘having it in for Scottish devolution’ sees her sailing close to the wind with regard to the SNP’s own hate legislation. Perhaps she’ll have her day in court for all the wrong reasons. Graham Wyllie, Greengairs, Lanarkshire.

Our First Minister’s credibility is rapidly ebbing away. There have been endless changes in major policies like declaring independence referenda about to happen almost every year or making every election solely about independence and then backtracking. Now Scots are being exposed to an expensive court action over ill-thought-out gender reforms just after a similar Supreme Court venture ended in ignominy. The experts appear to be lining up against Nicola Sturgeon’s opinion yet again on this new issue and this is all costing taxpayers money at a time when this is really needed for more urgent usage. Scotland is rapidly looking silly on the international stage and just what does the European Union make of a country that seeks to take legal action with every perceived slight? Is this a suitable country for membership? Ms Sturgeon is not doing herself or her cause any favours. Dr Gerald Edwards, Glasgow.
They’ve included 16-year-olds in the Gender Reform Bill, they’ve introduced sex education for five-year-olds in schools, they lowered the voting age to 16, they want 16-year-olds to be able to stand for election as MSPs. They lost their battle over the Named Person Act, they tried to alter history to be taught in schools. They’ve set the parameters for the judiciary in sentencing by stating that a person isn’t fully aware of what they are doing when committing a crime until the age of 25. The SNP is hell-bent on brainwashing a whole generation, from the ages of five to 25, to ensure they become SNP voters. We have until 2026, the next Holyrood elections, to stop this cynical move to keep them in power forever. Labour, Conservatives and Lib Dems must surely form an alliance to fight this election. It’s the only way the SNP are going to be stopped from inflicting more damage on Scotland. Ian Balloch, Grangemouth, Falkirk.
I am now rather sick and tired of hearing about the Ferguson Marine shipyard and its long overdue vessels which are needed now, not a few years from now The build contract should, in my own view, never have been placed with a UK yard as shipbuilding on a large scale, even here in Scotland, died many years ago. Now most new vessel contracts are gained by Scandinavian and European shipyards who can even tell you the date the vessels will be ready, as per contract. Given the scandalous amount of taxpayers’ cash that has been thrown at the Ferguson yard to complete the two ferries they need to be completed as soon as possible. As for other new ferry contracts being awarded to Turkish yards, I am in no doubt that the vessels will be built to a high standard and on time. A large proportion of the pelagic fishing vessels have been built in Scandinavia, Poland and Thrkey and delivered on time. It’s very easy for a politician to question why the new ferry contract went to Europe rather than Scotland, but the answer was there for all to see. Scottish shipyards for commercial use are now dead other than the naval ships that are being built in the UK. Let’s hope the Western Isles population get their new ferries soon rather than later. At FMQs Nicola was attacked for her record on education and health. Judging by her replies, you’d think everything is fine. If so, why are so many in those sectors on strike? William Ballantine, Bo’ness.
