The rise and fall of Nicola Sturgeon is a book in the making. The girl who joined the SNP as a teenager campaigning for Scottish Independence and who during her university years at Glasgow threw herself into the bear pit of Glasgow University debating society to hone her abilities (which it is rumoured were less than impressive to start with).

The woman who married the Party Chairman to form a triangulate of power as Alex Salmond’s deputy. The woman whose private life is so tightly protected that salacious rumour and speculation rarely leak out. The woman who sits home and allegedly reads so many books that those of us that consider ourselves avid readers wonder what we have been doing with our lives!

Her infamous statement “judge me on education” might reasonably be the starting point. Ms Sturgeon’s flagship policy of closing the attainment gap is tortured by the data.

When she took power In 2014 Scotland was ranked the most highly educated country in Europe and one of the best in the world.

Eight years later Scotland only participates in one international ranking comparison, the OECD PISA which measures the capabilities of 15-year-olds in reading, maths and science.
