Nursing and midwifery vacancies across the NHS in Scotland have jumped 24% in a one-year period, latest figures have shown.

The Scottish Liberal Democrats warned a “lack of support is taking its toll” on the workforce and that “many are being pushed towards the exit”.

New figures published this week have revealed a total of 6,010 full-time equivalent nursing and midwifery vacancies in the Scottish NHS, as of June 2022. This is up from 4,845 in June 2021.

In total, the data shows there are now 64,193 nursing and midwifery staff employed at NHS Scotland – up less than 1% on the year before.
